So much for Arsenal's defensive crisis. Monday's 2-0 win over West Brom was the Gunners' third straight clean sheet in the Premier League since they shipped four goals at Liverpool and everyone was calling on Arsene Wenger to scrap his back-three experiment.
Wenger himself even seemed to entertain that notion, with Arsenal having conceded eight times in the opening three matches of the season. But he resisted any urge to switch formations and since then they've allowed just one goal in five games in all competitions -- and that was a lob from 40 yards after a howler by David Ospina in the Europa League win over Cologne.
It would be naive to think that Arsenal's infamously porous defence has suddenly become rock solid. But clearly it's not as bad as it looked a month ago. Here are three reasons for the turnaround.
The back three
Arsenal, once again, clearly weren't ready for the start of the season. Shkodran Mustafi returned late from holiday and wasn't match fit, Laurent Koscielny was suspended for the opening two games and Wenger's solution was to play as many players as possible out of position.
Arsenal finished the 4-3 win over Leicester with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at right-back, two left-backs as centre-backs and right-back Hector Bellerin as left-back. Confusing? Yes it was. The lineup at Liverpool didn't make much more sense as Mustafi and Sead Kolasinac were both dropped and Wenger reverted to a similarly humorous back four in the second half.
But since Wenger started slotting square pegs into square holes, things have looked much better. The back three of Mustafi, Koscielny and Nacho Monreal looked downright respectable against Bournemouth, Chelsea and West Brom. Mustafi still has a habit of tempting fate and was lucky not to concede a penalty against West Brom, but he offers a robust physical presence at the heart of the defence. Monreal was nothing short of magnificent against West Brom and seems to grow more comfortable with every game.
The second-string trio of Per Mertesacker, Rob Holding and Calum Chambers also looked good in the Carabao Cup win over Doncaster, so Wenger now has both depth and quality at centre-back. Who would have said that after the Liverpool game?
Sead Kolasinac
The Bosnia & Herzegovina left-back-turned-wing-back deserves special mention, as his impact on the team has been clear for all to see. Wenger's decision to drop him at Anfield was strange at the time and feels mindboggling now that Kolasinac has shown what he brings to the team. A goal and two assists only tell part of the story -- it's his impact on the defence that's really interesting.
Arsenal, traditionally seen as one of the softest teams in England, now have one of the strongest players in the league and someone opponents will dread going up against in duels. Attackers keep bouncing off Kolasinac as he goes in for fair shoulder-to-shoulder challenges, and not many chances have been created down Arsenal's left flank since Wenger finally deployed him as a wing-back. Kolasinac's physicality sets the tone for the entire team and adds an element that has been sorely missed for many years.
Petr Cech
OK, so Arsenal's defence hasn't been flawless in the last three games. But Cech has. When Mustafi played Pedro Rodriguez onside during the first half at Stamford Bridge, Cech bailed him out with a good save. When Mustafi clumsily tripped Jay Rodriguez in the area but the referee waved play on, Cech bailed him out again by diverting the West Brom striker's shot onto the post with a fingertip save.
Cech has been questioned just as much as his defenders by some Arsenal fans, but he has shown superb early-season form. Cech won the Premier League's Golden Glove in his first season at Arsenal -- having won it three times with Chelsea. After that Liverpool game, the idea of a fifth Golden Glove award this season looked laughable. But three clean sheets later, it doesn't look so silly.
Arsenal's defence may not be so bad after all.
After Trump Blasts N.F.L., Players Kneel and Lock Arms in Solidarity
Unknown September 26, 2017 International, News, NFL, Sport No comments
N.F.L. players across the country demonstrated during the national anthemon Sunday in a show of solidarity against President Trump, who scolded the league and players on Twitter this weekend.
■ With the support of owners, some of whom joined their teams on the field, dozens of players knelt in silent protests, while Tom Brady and others opted to stand and lock arms.
■ The Seattle Seahawks and the Tennessee Titans stayed in their locker rooms during the anthem in Nashville. The Pittsburgh Steelers also skipped the anthem in Chicago.
■ After the demonstrations began, Mr. Trump weighed in on Twitter, saying he approved of players locking arms, but declaring that kneeling during the anthem was “not acceptable.”
The entire offensive line of the Oakland Raiders, the only line in the N.F.L. made up entirely of African-American players, was joined by virtually the entire team in kneeling or sitting during the national anthem before their game against the host Washington Redskins. It was one of the strongest visual displays of the many protests today, and across the field, the Redskins stood with linked arms as some players chose to kneel.
Many fans at FedEx Field could be heard booing the players while they sat.
Michele Tafoya reported that Raiders Coach Jack Del Rio told her the Raiders players would have preferred to stay in the locker room, but because of the demands of prime-time television they would have likely incurred a delay of game penalty.
The protests were part of a massive show of solidarity in the face of harsh criticism by President Trump, who had called for protesting players to be fired. The day’s slate of games started early, with Baltimore and Jacksonville facing off in London, meaning the protests occurred over a span of 11 hours.

Trump Sounds Off Again
Every N.F.L. game today has carried some level of demonstration by players, with some teams going as far as not appearing on the field for the national anthem. But nearly nine hours after the games had begun, President Trump once again took to Twitter to condemn the players who choose not to stand for the anthem, and the league that allows it. It was his 12th sports-related tweet or retweet in a 36-hour period.
Players Explain Why They Made a Statement
Miami Dolphins tight end Julius Thomas, who previously had stood during the anthem, instead knelt on Sunday with three teammates. Asked what had changed for him, he said: “To have the president trying to intimidate people — I wanted to send a message that I don’t condone that. I’m not O.K. with somebody trying to prevent someone from standing up for what they think is important.
“Lots of people don’t have a voice, and I wanted to tell those folks that they’re not alone. I used my position to try to empower everybody who seeks equality.”
LeSean McCoy, a running back for the Buffalo Bills, also addressed the issue following his game against the Denver Broncos.
“I can’t stand and support something where our leader of this country is just acting like a jerk, you know, angry and upset about N.F.L. players protesting in a peaceful manner,” McCoy said.
Drew Brees, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, said: “I disagree with what the president said and how he said it. I think it’s very unbecoming of the office of President of the United States to talk like that to the great people like that. And obviously he’s disappointed a lot of people. But as it pertains to the national anthem, I will always feel that if you are an American that the national anthem is the opportunity for us all to stand up together, to be unified and to show respect for our country.”
Trump Says Locking Arms Is Good, Kneeling Isn’t
At 2:20 p.m. Eastern, more than five hours into the slate of games and about eight hours after tweeting that fans should boycott games, Mr. Trump again weighed in on the national anthem demonstrations, issuing his approval for the locking of arms, while still condemning the players who chose to kneel.
The tweet appeared to be Mr. Trump suggesting that the players choosing to lock arms were showing support of the anthem, rather than protesting his remarks.
Odell Beckham Jr. Raises Fist After Touchdown
The protests did not all happen before the games. When the Giants tied the score in the second half of their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Odell Beckham Jr. chose to celebrate by dropping the ball and standing in the end zone with his fist raised above his head in a protest that has been done by black athletes going back to the 1960s. After the brief demonstration, Beckham ran to the sideline to celebrate the score in a more traditional fashion.
Benjamin Mendy: Manchester City full-back to visit knee specialist in Barcelona...
Benjamin Mendy will visit a knee specialist in Barcelona because Manchester City fear his injury is more significant than first thought.
The French full-back was substituted after 29 minutes of Saturday's 5-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Speaking before City's Champions League encounter with Shakhtar Donetsk, manager Pep Guardiola suggested Mendy, 23, might train later on Monday.
But the £52m summer signing from Monaco did not appear with the squad.
The French international will travel to see Barcelona-based Ramon Cugat, a close friend of Guardiola, who treated City duo Vincent Kompany and Kevin de Bruyne last season.

Dele Alli: Fifa hearing into 'gesture' takes place this week...
England midfielder Dele Alli will learn in the coming days if he is to be punished for an offensive gesture made in a World Cup qualifier against Slovakia earlier this month.
Alli, 21, said the middle-finger gesture was aimed at team-mate Kyle Walker, not an official or opponent.
A disciplinary panel for football's governing body Fifa will look at the matter this week.
Any punishment will be communicated "a few days after the hearing", Fifa said.
Television footage showed Tottenham's Alli making the gesture after being body-checked by defender Martin Skrtel and referee Clement Turpin waved play on.
England, who won the game at Wembley 2-1 on 4 September, top Group F by five points from Slovakia. They host Slovenia on 5 October and travel to Lithuania three days later in their final qualifying matches.
If handed a lengthy ban, Alli could miss those matches as well as the start of the World Cup in Moscow next summer with England likely to qualify.
The Football Association had previously sent a video to Fifa in a bid to prove that the gesture was aimed at Walker.
Alli also denied the gesture had been aimed at referee Turpin, posting on social media after the match to say it was directed towards ex-Tottenham team-mate and "good friend" Walker.
England manager Gareth Southgate also supported Alli's claim, saying: "They have a strange way of communicating."
The hearing is set to take place on Wednesday and Thursday.
Alexis Sanchez: West Brom boss Tony Pulis accuses Arsenal forward of cheating...
West Brom head coach Tony Pulis has accused Alexis Sanchez of "cheating" during Arsenal's 2-0 win over the Baggies in the Premier League.
Referee Bobby Madley also failed to give the Baggies what Pulis felt was a certain penalty for a foul on Jay Rodriguez when the game was goalless.
"In the game's first free-kick Sanchez dives and should be booked. That's cheating," Pulis told Sky Sports.
"Then the tackle in the box on Jay, it is a stonewall penalty."
Sanchez went down under a challenge from Baggies defender Craig Dawson in the early minutes of the match and Pulis was incensed on the touchline.
Then after seven minutes Rodriguez appeared to be fouled inside the box by Gunners defender Shkodran Mustafi, but Madley did not award a penalty.
The West Brom forward quickly got up and shot, but his effort was brilliantly pushed onto the post by Gunners keeper Petr Cech.
Summarising on BBC Radio 5 live, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown said: "That should have been a penalty. It was a massive let off for Arsenal. Rodriguez was too honest."
Speaking to the BBC afterwards, Pulis added: "We tell our players not to roll about, he still wanted to score but once he has missed, the referee should pull it back.
"It could be a penalty and they could have a player sent off so we not only score but are against a team down to 10 players."
Alexandre Lacazette scored twice as Arsenal moved up to seventh in the table, with the Gunners producing a dominant second-half performance.
Wenger admitted West Brom had a strong case for a penalty before Lacazette struck the opener.
"They pushed us very hard, especially in the first half," said the Frenchman. "They disturbed our build up and played a very dangerous and direct game. In the second half I felt we controlled the game and did not give anything away.
"Would it [the West Brom penalty call] have been given I would not have said it is a scandal."
Not awarding a penalty to West Brom was one of a number of questionable decisions made in the first-half by Madley, who was at one point during the game the top trend on Twitter in the United Kingdom.
Arsenal, who were awarded a penalty in the second half when Allan Nyom clumsily fouled Aaron Ramsey, also had a case for a spot kick being awarded in the first half when Sanchez appeared to have his shirt tugged by Baggies defender Grzegorz Krychowiak.
After the game, Rodriguez was adamant there had been contact in the box for West Brom's penalty appeal.
"I went down and expected the foul to be given but it wasn't so I got back up," he said. "I wasn't injured or hurt. For me it was a penalty, sometimes you get them sometimes you don't.
"I wouldn't be rolling around trying to get free-kicks. It is one of those things but it is just difficult because if you do get that goal, 1-0 up changes the game."
Ben Stokes: England cricketer arrested after Bristol nightclub incident....
England all-rounder Ben Stokes was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm after a nightclub incident in Bristol early on Monday.
He will not be available for England's fourth one-day international against West Indies on Wednesday, the England and Wales Cricket Board has announced.
Team-mate Alex Hales, who was with Stokes, will also miss the match and has returned to Bristol to help police.
Stokes was held overnight after the team's victory in the third ODI.
The team went 2-0 up in the best-of-five series with a 124-run victory on Sunday, in which Stokes made 73.
The 26-year-old Test vice-captain was arrested after an incident at about 02:35 BST at the city's Mbargo club which left another man needing hospital treatment for facial injuries.
England are due to name their squad on Wednesday for the Ashes tour of Australia.
Director of cricket Andrew Strauss indicated Durham player Stokes and 28-year-old Nottinghamshire batsman Hales would be considered on cricketing grounds alone.
"Selectors have been instructed to select the Ashes squad based on form and fitness as they normally would do," said England director of cricket Andrew Strauss.
England ODI captain Eoin Morgan told BBC Sport: "It has been a little bit of a distraction. As a group we are strong at sticking together and working well as a team. It has the potential to affect the game but not letting that happen is something we will strive to do.
"Jason Roy will definitely come in and play and we will make a final call on the other decision in the morning. We will look to bring others up as cover as well."
Kent batsman and wicketkeeper Sam Billings has been drafted into the squad for Wednesday's match.
Statement from Avon and Somerset Police
"We were called to a disorder in Queens Road, Clifton, at around 2.35am on Monday [25 September].
"A 27-year-old man was found to have suffered facial injuries and was taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary for treatment.
"A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and has since been released under investigation.
"We'd appeal for anyone who was in the Clifton Triangle area in the early hours of Monday who saw any part of this incident, to call Investigations on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5217218578."
Statement from England and Wales Cricket Board
"Ben Stokes and Alex Hales will not be available for tomorrow's one-day international match against West Indies at The Oval.
"Stokes was held overnight and released under investigation - without charge - late on Monday and will not join the team in London.
"Hales, who was with Stokes on Sunday night, did not train this morning and has returned voluntarily to Bristol today to help police with their enquiries.
"You will understand that we cannot offer further detail at this stage but will provide any updates when we can."
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho 'happy' at escaping ban.....
Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho is "happy" he can be "doing my work normally against Crystal Palace" after avoiding an FA ban following his sending off at Southampton.
The Manchester United boss is in Russia for Wednesday's Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow and was asked about the FA's decision not to take further action for being sent to the stands near the end of Saturday's 1-0 win at St Mary's.
"If I am not punished, it is because there were no reasons for the sending-off," Mourinho said.
The referee involved on the south coast at the weekend received praise from the United boss, who does not blame him for only showing Shane Long a yellow card for his tackle that costs Marouane Fellaini the chance to play in Russia.
"Craig Pawson is one of the big talents in England," Mourinho added. "He had an amazing game. He was so calm and in control. After I watch it on TV, no camera on Craig and he made that decision."
Mourinho confirmed that Fellaini would be joined by fellow midfielders Michael Carrick and Paul Pogba on the sidelines.
Pogba is out with a hamstring problem and the Portuguese boss said no further update on his condition was available.
Mourinho was asked how much his team would miss Fellaini on Wednesday night, with the Belgian not having recovered from an ankle injury he suffered in a tackle by Shane Long in the victory over the Saints.
"He was lucky [not to be out longer]," Mourinho said. "It could have been a much worse situation.
"I expect him not to be out for a long time and after Crystal Palace there is an international break, with no pressure on Belgium, so hopefully he will be back for us.
"The solutions are not many. We are trying not to focus on individual battles in specific areas on the pitch.
"We are going to have a team with quality and balance to try to win the match. That's our objective."
Defenders Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are available again after serving European suspensions.

Boost the Speed of Your Android Phone or Tablet......Try this
Free Up Space
Your device will run faster if the memory isn't maxed out.
- Evaluate the apps you have on your phone or tablet and remove any of the ones you no longer need or use. This frees up space on the device. To delete an app you downloaded, go to the settings and look for the App Manager. Sometimes it's hidden but just look around for it. Tap any app listed in the App Manager that you want to uninstall to open its info screen. Tap the Uninstall button at the bottom of the screen to remove it.
- Also, disable any apps that came on your mobile device but that you don't use. In most cases, you go to the App Properties to disable an app.
- Look at your photo and music libraries. If you take several photos each time–just to get the best one–you can delete all those extra shots. If you see songs that you thought you'd listen to but haven't, get rid of them.
- Check your Downloads folder. You may find it crammed full of files you no longer need.
- Go to the settings and open the storage page. Look for an "Other" or "Misc" heading. Tap it and you'll probably see a bunch of files that apps downloaded to your phone or tablet. If you're sure you no longer need a file, delete it. If you aren't sure, leave it there.
Go Widget and Animation Free
As with apps, widgets that you don't need should be disabled. The widgets or launcher you use may provide animations and special effect look great, but they can slow down your phone or tablet.
Check in your launcher to see if you can disable these extra effects and gain a little speed.
Close Apps You Aren't Using
Keeping several apps open makes it easy to multitask, but closing open apps improve speed. Just pull up the running apps list which shows which apps are running and how much memory they are using and close the ones you don't need open.
Clear the Cache
Go got the device storage page in settings. Look for a Cached data entry topic and tap on it. You'll have an option to clear out all the cached data.
Restart the Phone or Tablet
The trusty restart has been a problem-solver since the beginning of the computer age. Put it to use with your phone or tablet occasionally. A restart can clear caches and clean up the system for a new—hopefully faster—start.
Know Which Apps Are Power Hungry
Monitor which apps use the most battery power (usually in Setting > Battery) and be aware of which apps use the most RAM (usually in Settings > Apps or Apps Manager, depending on the device).
Download Apps that Boost Android Performance
Apps that remove duplicate files from your phone or that declutter it help keep the phone in its best operating condition. There are several of these on the market. Among them are:
- Greenify - stops background apps from draining the battery
- File Commander - displays an overview of storage and identifies the categories that are using the most storage: Videos, Music, Pictures or Downloads.
- SD Maid - includes four individual tools—CorpseFinder, System Cleaner, App Cleaner, and Databases—each of which handles a different job. There are also tools for locating and deleting duplicate files.
Turn to The Final Option
If all else fails, and your Android phone or tablet is running unbearably slow, go for a factory reset. Your apps and data disappear (yes, all of them) and the phone returns to its original factory condition. You'll need to redownload the apps you want. Depending on your phone or tablet, look in settings for "backup" or "restore" or "privacy" to locate the factory reset option. After the reset is complete, your device should be back to running smoothly.
