Jose Mourinho has ordered Manchester United to make the signing of a specialist holding
midfielder the priority this summer, according to reports.
The Special One saw his side held to a frustrating 0-0 draw with West Brom yesterday and
afterwards he was openly critical of his forwards.
However, it seems that it’s not in attack that he sees as the biggest issue for his team.
According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho believes his side’s lack of a title challenge is down to
failing to sign N’Golo Kante last summer. He wants to rectify that before next season by
seeing Manchester United bring in their own midfield enforcer.
Manchester United have been linked with a £40million moves for Monaco’s Tiemoue
Bakayoko and Tottenham’s Eric Dier.
The report adds that Mourinho believes such a player would help to get the best out of world
record signing Paul Pogba, who could be given more licence to roam alongside a
defensively minded player.
It’s perhaps unsurprising Mourinho would want a specialist holding midfielder at Old Trafford
considering his three Premier League triumphs were secured with such a player featuring
prominently. For his first two with Chelsea it was Claude Makelele who filled the role, while
his last triumph was achieved after bringing Nemanja Matic back to Stamford Bridge.
